Ergonomic is the occupational health and safety
program that relates to my health and safety issues at my work site. A sound
understanding of ergonomics can prevent most workplace injuries by adjusting
tools to the user, putting an emphasis on proper posture to reduce the impact
of repetitive movements. The use of computers and rapidly changing technology
in the modern workplace has greatly increased the need for ergonomics. Desks,
chairs, monitors, keyboards and lighting all need to be assessed when creating
a workspace, whether it is at the office or at home. Ergonomics also takes into
account the need for movement throughout the day. Office furniture has
traditionally encouraged stiff, fixed postures and little movement. However, a
balance between sitting and standing, which can be aided with a height
adjustable desk is a proven way to combat the effects of sedentary workplace
behavior and work-related injuries.
Hi Chika,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement on improved work safety with newly developed technologies on ergonomics. At my current workplace, I have an adjustable computer desk that allows me to sit or stand when I'm on the computer for several hours a day. I certainly notice the difference in relief of my repetitive movements when I change my mobility from sitting to standing. I am glad that we are fortunate to work for companies that encourage good ergonomics and invest in training and equipment for their workers.
Hey Chika, I've used one of the adjustable desks as well. It really helps to be able to stand for awhile. I now use a timer on my computer to remind me to stand and move every hour. One item that is often overlooked is having a footrest for when seated to help prevent plantar fasciitis.
