I tract workplace violence (WPV), policy through my professional organization, American Psychiatric Nurse Association (APNA) WPV affects employees, patients and the large community. WPV refers to physical acts of violence or threats to harm a person or property. Abusive behavior, whether verbal, psychological or physical, are also considered violence.
WPV policy aims to develop programs, and supporting policies, that disseminate and promote knowledge, skills, and appropriate use of evidence-based, data-driven process for assessing, mitigating, and managing human behavior that compromise the safety and effectiveness of the new psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner residents in the clinical setting.
Evidence showed that new nurses are more prone to WPV compared to the older and experienced nurses in the clinical setting. There is also evidence that WPV policies and procedure put in place to guide and support new graduates’ nurses has shown a remarkable reduction in anxiety and improve staff confidence in their new nursing roles.
