Environmental Health Blog#3

The time has come for women to take back their beauty out of the hands of these gigantic multimillionaire-dollar unregulated cosmetic companies. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder; every woman must know. women must no longer allow these cosmetic industries define beauty for them. And will no longer support their toxic cosmetic products.

I am shocked to hear how much toxic chemicals women are exposed to in a day, and the biochemical reactions in their bodies.

Endocrine disruptors, which includes formaldehyde, perchloroethylene and 1,4 Dioxane found in some cosmetic products are carcinogenic, crossing brain and placenta barrier, affecting our reproductive organs, lead to birth defects, breast cancer and deaths.

Nurses must educate the population at risk, join the national conversation on safe cosmetic act, start grass root campaigns in their communities to educate consumers and cosmetic retailers to supply the non-toxic cosmetics. Engage in safe cosmetic policy discussion and advocacy at all governmental levels, including in their health care organizations. There is the need for Policy makers to monitor and regulate the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetic products.

  1. I agree with your stance on advocacy and policy discussion for cosmetic products. We commonly see activists protesting "animal testing and cruelty" in regards to cosmetic products; what about actual humans? It saddens me that this information is not as well known. I believe if the average person was aware of the health risks attributed to cosmetics, perfumes, lotions, etc., there would be a lot less of a market for these products, thus, forcing manufacturers and companies to comply to a regulated, healthy formula base. This, again, starts with policy.

  2. Hi Chika,
The cosmetic industry is a multi-billion dollar industry catering to all walks of life and socioeconomic status. Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but beauty is revered forever and invincible with the aid of cosmetics. That being said, despite the publication of the toxicology in the cosmetics, women and even men will procure the industry regardless. For the more conscientious consumer, the advocacy and education will have an impact on the brand of cosmetics they purchase. In fact, now I read all the ingredients in everything I buy; some of them I cannot even pronounce and cannot remember if this is a safe chemical or not.
