                                                      Environmental Health Blog#1

Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical and biological factors external to a person and all the related factors impacting behaviors. Environmental health encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health supportive environment.
Exposure to hazardous substances in the air calls more to my attention than other elements of environmental health.
After the 3rd case of lungs cancer among three out of the nine male and female caregivers who work in a nearby adult residential care home for the mentally ill population, called for a concern for secondhand smoke related health condition.
There is a high prevalence of tobacco use among the mentally ill. Environmental tobacco smoking constitutes occupational health hazard, such as lungs cancer and exacerbation of underlined  reactive airway diseases which includes asthma and bronchitis.

It is important to consider whether others have been exposed and need to be evaluated and treated, make intervention to decrease exposures in order to prevent illness in others. This also calls for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) intervention.

  1. Blog # 2 Population Explosion

Modern technology and medical advances have revolutionized human population growth, raised reproduction ceiling and decreased mortality. Exponential human growth impacts human carrying capacity which conflicts with the rule of ecological footprint. Earth is a very big planet; however, space remains a real limiting factor for human. Unlimited human population growth creates room for conflict over how space is used between human and other non- human organisms, (animals, trees, soil and water).
Exponential growth cannot go on forever, a balance between human carrying capacity and ecological footprint is warranted. Nursing practice can play the role of a regulating factor that keeps population size in equilibriums. Through community education, nurses can help the targeted population understand the negative impacts of exponential growth, such as poverty and increase mortality.
Supporting women’s advanced education will promote better career choices than becoming mothers at their young age. Adequate birth control education and empowering women to prolife/ pro-choice is for sure one-way nurses can help control population explosion.

  2. It saddens me that secondhand smoke is so prevalent and impactful. Although as a nation we have made strides in reducing cigarette smoking by increasing the legal age, cigarettes, smoking, and secondhand smoke are still rampant. Our youth are most vulnerable to secondhand smoke. Evaluating children and households can preserve our future generations and decrease lung diseases attributed to smoking.
